The short version

1. Who we are

CarbonKeel is a sole proprietorship. It is the "controller" of the personal data described below. For anything about your data, write to enquiry@carbonkeel.com.

2. What we collect, and when

WhenWhatWhere it goes
You use the "Talk to us" box or the contact form The topic you pick, your message, your email address and company name, if you type them. Your own email app opens with the message ready to send. Nothing is sent from the page itself, and nothing is stored in it. We receive it only if you press send in your email app.
You ask us to claim, correct or hide figures about a ship The IMO numbers, your company name, your email address and your message. Recorded on our server and in its activity log so we can check the request and reply. A request to hide figures takes effect straight away.
You search for a ship The name or IMO number you search for. We do not link searches to who you are. Our hosting provider records standard technical data (your IP address, the time and the page) in its server logs. We also hold your IP address in memory, briefly, to apply fair-use limits.
You visit a page or use a tool The page, the time, your country, the website you came from (its name only), any campaign tag in the link, whether you use a phone or a computer, and for ship lookups the ship and company you looked up (public register facts). Stored on our server to count visits and understand interest. Your country is worked out from your IP address, which is then discarded and never stored. A code that changes every day lets us count unique visitors; it cannot be linked to you after that day. Kept for up to 24 months. Country data: IP geolocation by DB-IP (CC BY 4.0).
You use the calculator with your own figures Fuel quantities, distance, speeds, voyage shares, prices, charter dates and any ship name or IMO number you type. Sent to our server over an encrypted connection, used to work out the answer, and discarded when the answer is returned. We do not store them or write them to our logs. A CSV or PDF you download is made on your own device.
You change prices or other settings The allowance prices, pool price and similar settings you chose. Remembered in your browser’s local storage on your own device, so they are there next time. This is not a cookie and is not sent anywhere except as part of a calculation. Clear it with your browser’s site-data settings.
You enter an access key (only if we have switched keys on) The key. Remembered in your browser’s local storage on your own device so you do not retype it. It is sent to us only to check it when you use the calculator.

We do not use cookies or advertising trackers, and no third party sees your visit. The "Talk to us" box is not a chatbot: it is a form that hands your message to your email app.

3. Why we use it, and our legal basis

We do not use your details for marketing to you unless you have contacted us about our services or asked to hear from us, and you can say stop at any time.

4. The ship and company data on this site

The emissions figures come from the public register that the European Commission and EMSA publish under Article 21 of Regulation (EU) 2015/757. Ships and shipping companies are not people, so this is not personal data. If you are a sole trader and the register identifies you personally, you can object or ask us to hide our figures about your ships, by email at any time.

Source and method. Ship figures come from the EMSA THETIS-MRV public register, published under Article 21 of Regulation (EU) 2015/757. Contains data from EMSA; our calculations are our own and are not endorsed by EMSA or the European Commission. Figures rebuilt from the register are estimates. The market figures on the home page are the verifier-reported EU ETS-scope CO₂ of every ship in the latest report, priced at an assumed €85 per EU allowance (close to the September 2026 market average) at the full rate that applies from 2026. The full method is published in the app.

5. Who else sees it

Only the service providers we need to run the site:

We do not sell or rent your data and we do not share it for advertising. Some of these providers are headquartered outside the European Economic Area. Where that involves your personal data, the transfer is covered by the safeguards the provider publishes in its own data-processing terms, such as standard contractual clauses.

6. How long we keep it

7. Your rights

You can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, restrict how we use it, or stop using it where we rely on legitimate interests. You can also ask for a copy in a portable format. Email enquiry@carbonkeel.com; we will answer within one month.

If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you have the right to complain to your local data protection authority (in the EU or UK, the supervisory authority where you live). We would rather you told us first so we can put it right.

8. Automated decisions

None. We make no automated decisions about you.

9. Changes

If we change this notice we will update the date at the top. We will not use what you have already given us for a new purpose without asking you first.
