| Option | Fuel saved | Carbon cost saved | Fuel cost saved | Longer at sea | Saved a year | One-off cost | Pays back | How sure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sail 10% slower Slow steaming within the charter terms; just-in-time arrival where the port allows it. | 688 t | €88,405 | €413,052 | −€150,384 12.5 more days | €351,073 | none | at once | Check ETA Time at sea rises 11%. Charter-party speed warranties and the schedule decide whether it is possible. |
| Hull and propeller cleaning In-water hull cleaning and propeller polish at a port that allows it. | 155 t | €19,905 | €93,001 | — | €112,906 | €37,000 | 3.9 months | Review first The 4% is a typical fouling loss. Your speed-power reference and noon reports show the real one. |
| Trim optimisation Sail at the trim that needs least power for the draft, from a trim table. | 58 t | €7,466 | €34,875 | — | €42,341 | €5,000 | 1.4 months | Needs data Needs the ship's trim tables or a trim study; the effect depends on draft and cargo plan. |
| All three together Computed together: the savings overlap, so they are not the sum of the three. | 859 t | €110,333 | €515,502 | −€150,384 | €475,451 | €42,000 | 1.1 months |
Fuel at €600/t. A day off hire, or a day longer at sea, at €12,000 (about 113 days at sea a year at 12 knots). One-off costs are typical: cleaning €25,000 plus a day off hire, a trim study €5,000. Allowances €85, pool €110/t CO₂e. Your own costs replace these.
CarbonKeel is not a verifier. Allowances are surrendered, and FuelEU balances settled, on the figures the ship’s verifier accepts.
Send us the ship’s noon reports, the verifier’s emissions report and the sea-trial curve. We recompute every figure on them, reconcile each one against your verifier, and price the options with your own costs. The pilot covers one ship; the fee is agreed on a short call.

CarbonKeel’s figures are our own calculations from that data and are not endorsed by EMSA or the European Commission. Options are modelled on the public year: main-engine fuel per mile follows (1 + Δv)², auxiliary fuel the time at sea; hull and trim act on main-engine fuel at sea.
