Where the data come from
Every ship of 5,000 GT and above that calls at an EU or EEA port reports its fuel, CO₂ and distance under the EU MRV Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2015/757. Once verified, EMSA publishes the figures in the THETIS-MRV register under Article 21. CarbonKeel loads the register and, for each ship, works out what EU ETS, UK ETS, FuelEU Maritime and the CII mean for it in euros.
What you see for each ship
- CO₂ emitted, fuel burned and distance, as published
- EU ETS allowances and their cost, with methane and nitrous oxide from 2026
- FuelEU Maritime balance, penalty and the cost of pooling instead
- An estimated CII rating, with the capacity it is based on
- A Poseidon Principles alignment score for lenders
All of these are estimates from public data, labelled as such. Figures from the company's own data are calculations prepared for its verifier; only the verifier and the Administration verify compliance. Ship results are not indexed by search engines, and an operator can ask us to stop showing derived figures for its ship.
Questions
Where do the ship emissions come from?
From EMSA's THETIS-MRV register, which publishes each ship's verified CO₂, fuel and distance under Article 21 of Regulation (EU) 2015/757.
Which ships are in the register?
Ships of 5,000 GT and above that called at EU or EEA ports in the year.
Are the costs shown exact?
No. They are estimates from public data, with the assumptions shown. A company's own data give a calculation for its verifier to check.
Can an operator remove its ship?
An operator can ask us to stop showing derived figures for its ship. The register's own figures stay public by law.
EU ETS, FuelEU, CII and UK ETS for each ship, from the public register or your own data, with the reports for owners, charterers and lenders.
